Meatballs in a Rich Mushroom Sauce

Juicy meatballs simmered in a creamy, savory mushroom gravy. A comforting and hearty dish perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Meatballs:
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 tsp thyme
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 1-inch meatballs.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove meatballs and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add mushrooms and cook until golden and tender, about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in beef broth and heavy cream. Add thyme, salt, and pepper.
  6. Bring the gravy to a simmer, then return the meatballs to the skillet. Cook for 10-15 minutes, until meatballs are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  7. Serve hot over egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or rice.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute half-and-half for heavy cream and use ground turkey instead of beef.
